ITコーパス君 - pertaining

今回もITコーパス君からの引用。ITコーパス君についてはこの日記を参照してください。今回の動詞はpertain。ただ、実際にはpertainingとして出てくるのがほとんど。ITコーパス君の中でもpertainが５回に対してpertainingが21回と圧倒的に多いですね。
pertainは「付属する」、「関連する」という意味。これがそのままの形で動詞として使われるケースは、
This article discussed issues that pertain to the selection of a Java solution for devices with a significant investment in heritage code.
These files do not pertain to character recognition.
このようにほとんどがpertain toとして出てきます。これがpertaining toとしては次のようになります。

つまり、「〜に関する」という表現は当然よく使いますが、pertaining toをつかうとそういった修飾関係がストレートに表現ができます。例えば、上の１つ目の文章で、
The Java code from the UML specification is presented in Listing 1.
などとした場合よりも、pertaining toを使ったほうが、「UML仕様をベースに書いたJavaコードは・・・」という意味を明確に表現できます。前置詞などは、例えばA for Bといった場合に、forの解釈は「〜対して」、「〜ために」、「〜用に」などある程度幅が出てきます。動詞を使った修飾のほうがその意味がきちんと伝えやすくなるわけで、それだけ読みやすい文章になるということです。
